Entah kenapa kali ini pengen banget nulis soal bapak saya. Iya bapak saya yang hampir seumur hidup saya tidak pernah benar-benar saya mengerti. Sampai beberapa saat lalu ketika saya mengalami sendiri sebuah kebahagiaan kecil yang bisa dibilang hampir sama sebab musababnya dengan kebahagiaan bapak.
Bapak dan besi tua
Syahdan, di tahun 70 an, ketika umur bapak saya menjelang 30an, bapak merintis bisnis mesin bekas dan besi tua. Utamanya motor dan mobil. Motor dan mobil yang sudah tidak terawat di empunya, dibeli dengan harga murah oleh bapak, lalu didereklah si motor atau mobil itu ke rumah.
Dicobalah motor dan mobil itu dibenahi oleh bapak, kalau sekiranya tidak bisa atau terlalu mahal untuk dibenahi, motor atau mobil itu akan “disembelih” oleh bapak. “Disembelih” di sini berarti dicopoti satu per satu untuk kemudian dimodifikasi atau dijadikan spare part bagi yang membutuhkannya. Sedang bagian-bagian yang tidak tertolong, akan dikilokan sebagai besi tua. Mesin-mesin yang masih lumayan bagus, kadang dimodifikasi oleh bapak untuk dijadikan mesin kapal nelayan. Entah bagaimana bapak bikinnya, saya juga tidak tahu 
Kalaupun mesin itu tak seutuhnya prima, bapak akan mencopoti satu per satu dan dipilih bagian mana yang masih bagus, untuk dijual ke orang yang membutuhkan. Kadang, cara ini menghasilkan untung yang lumayan besar, terutama bagian-bagian yang sudah tidak dijual lagi di toko. Para penghobi motor atau mobil dengan sukarela membelinya dengan harga mahal.
Bapak dan usahanya yang makin besar
Bertahun-tahun bapak melakukan usaha itu. Usaha bapak pun perlahan makin membesar. Bapak lalu mulai mengajak teman dan orang-orang yang berminat dengan permesinan untuk membantu bapak. Diajarilah mereka teknik-teknik membongkar dan memperbaiki mesin dengan baik. Memilih mana yang masih layak jual dan yang harus dikilokan dan dianggap besi tua, juga mengajarkan bagaimana menaksir harga mobil sehingga tidak mengalami kerugian ketika dibongkar dan dijual lagi bagian-bagiannya.
Orang-orang datang dan pergi, baik pembeli ataupun orang-orang yang membantu bapak. Satu hal yang saya heran, orang-orang yang bekerja sama dengan bapak biasanya tak lama. Dua atau tiga tahun kemudian, mereka pergi. Dan datang orang baru lagi. Ke mana mereka?
Waktu itu, saya belumlah terlalu besar, saya tidak pernah merisaukan kemana mereka pergi dan apa yang mereka lakukan. Yang saya tahu, selain bapak saya yang kerasnya amit-amit dalam membesarkan saya hidup saya bahagia. Setiap sehabis sholat Jumat seperti ini, bapak selalu mengajak saya ke sebuah tempat bernama Slomoth. Tempat yang sungguh ngeheits kala itu, bahkan sempat dipakai sebagai tempat shooting Film Kabayan. Slomoth ngeheits sebagai tempat hiburan malam dan persewaan kaset Video Betamax. Bapak membolehkan saya memilih kaset video untuk ditonton pada Jumat, Sabtu dan Minggu sore.
Tahun-tahun pun berlalu, dan hidup saya bahagia. Sepertinya, saya tidak bisa meminta lebih lagi. Hidup yang bisa dibilang berkecukupan, bapak dan ibu yang sayang sama saya, meski banyak hal yang kadang sama sekali tak saya mengerti dari mereka.
Suatu siang, bapak mengajak saya ke sebuah tempat. Tempat itu bernama Jalan Wonosari. Banyak sekali saya lihat orang yang mempunyai usaha sama persis dengan bapak saya. Hampir sepanjang jalan itu, semua berusaha hal yang sama. Ada yang kecil kecilan, ada yang bahkan lebih besar dari usaha bapak saya. Di setiap tempat itu, bapak menyempatkan diri untuk mampir. Setiap kali bapak mampir, hampir selalu disambut gembira dan senyum oleh pemiliknya. Orang-orang yang sepertinya pernah ada dalam hidup saya. Ya, mereka orang-orang yang pernah bekerja pada bapak saya.
Wah, Mas Zain, apa kabar?
Kurang lebih begitulah awal basa-basi mereka menyapa. Dan obrolan-obrolan pun mulai mengalir hangat. Saat-saat itulah dalam hidup saya, paling sering melihat melihat bapak tertawa lepas. Obrolan dengan banyak teman lama dan bekas pekerja bapak saya. ah, rupanya di sini mereka, sudah mandiri, membuka usaha sendiri.
Mungkin, pesta memang kadang harus berakhir lebih cepat
80an, 90an, dan akhirnya 2000an. Masa ketika sepertinya “pesta” keluarga kami harus berhenti sementara. Bapak saya makin menua, dan sudah tidak bisa melakukan usaha yang sama, dan saya anak satu-satunya yang sontoloyo ini entah mengapa benar-benar tidak tertarik, tidak bisa, dan merasa tidak mampu melanjutkan apa yang sudah menjadi penghidupan keluarga saya selama dua puluh tahun lebih. Saya memilih berusaha di bidang lain, yang kalau boleh jujur, belumlah berhasil juga sampai sekarang.
Selain keras, bapak saya sungguhlah orang yang keras kepala. Merasa sudah tidak mampu bekerja sendiri, bapak menjalin kerjasama dengan banyak orang, satu dua teman lama, beberapa teman bahkan orang baru. Banyak diantara usaha bapak itu yang bapak tidak ikut berperan secara langsung.
Singkat cerita, meskipun beberapa usaha bapak ada yang berjalan baik, banyak yang zonk. Bapak saya tertipu, beberapa diantaranya oleh teman bapak sendiri. Simpanan, bapak bertahun-tahun habis, kami harus menjual semua rumah kami. Tanpa sisa. Tiris.
Pak, kini baru aku mengerti
Kini senyum bapak tak sesering dulu lagi, tapi bapak masih saja tertawa dan berbinar ketika ada orang yang cerita tentang “anak-anaknya”. Ada yang sanggup naik haji berkali-kali, punya rumah dimana-mana, punya ini, punya itu, bikin ini, bikin itu. Bapak saya selalu penuh antusias mendengarkannya. Baik diceritakan secara langsung atau lewat orang ketiga, hal itu tak pernah gagal membuat bapak saya gembira. Lagi-lagi saya tidak mengerti.
Pak, kita itu sekarang kere, dan ketika mereka dengan congkaknya menceritakan pencapaiannya tanpa berbuat apapun untuk kita, kenapa bapak masih saja tertawa dan bahagia untuk mereka?
Ketidakmengertian saya dengan keantikan bapak saya itupun bertahan cukup lama. Sampai baru beberapa saat ini saya sadari, dan merasakan sendiri apa yang menjadi kebahagiaan bapak saya. Saya yang masih saja kere ini, mendengar kabar gembira dari teman saya. Meski hanya teman seperjuangan, seide, dan sedikit hal yang saya bagi ke mereka, tidak seperti bapak dan “anak-anak” yang dibesarkannya, saya pun merasakan kegembiraan yang sama. Dan sayapun teringat suatu saat ketika saya belum benar-benar dewasa, bapak saya pernah berkata
Nak, jadi kaya dan bisa ini itu adalah satu hal, tapi bisa membuat orang bisa ini dan itu adalah hal yang lebih membahagiakan…
